"Build A Machine, Not A Job"

The American educational system prepares most of us to be employees. From an early age, we are taught to get good grades, get a job, and work for someone else. As a result, when people decide to go into business for themselves, they often approach their business the same way they approached their job.

But a business is not a job—it is a machine. A business is made up of multiple interconnected parts that must work together toward a common purpose. Due to our employee-based upbringing, business owners often focus on working in the business rather than on the business. When that happens, key parts of the machine are neglected, misused, or misunderstood, causing the business to operate far below its potential.

A business’s accounting system serves as the dashboard for that machine. It provides insight into how each part of the business is performing—what’s working well, what’s underperforming, and where attention is needed. Without understanding this dashboard, owners are left guessing.

The role of the CFO is to help business owners and managers understand and use their financial information as a management tool. A CFO translates the accounting data into clear insights, enabling owners to monitor performance, make informed decisions, and ensure that all parts of the business machine are operating efficiently and profitably.
